Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Internal Auditor to join our professional team at Barrow Borough Council. Applications are invited for the post to work as a member of the Internal Audit team on a permanent and full-time basis of 37 hours per week. The successful candidate will assist the team in providing an effective Internal Audit service to Barrow Borough Council by evaluating the adequacy of internal control and governance arrangements, risk management, and the use of resources; and making recommendations for improvement where necessary. The Department also undertakes a large volume of housing benefit related testing which involves both determinations and payments. You will be based in The Town Hall; the main duties of the post include: performing audit investigations, undertaking audit fieldwork and producing formal written reports, including recommendations for improvement in operations. It is essential that applicants have significant demonstrable experience of working withinat least one of: Internal Audit, Revenues and Benefits, Finance, or Local Government. You will need to be self-motivated and possess high attention to detail and excellent analytical and IT skills. Effective communication skills both verbal and written are an essential requirement, along withthe ability to organise and prioritise your workload.It is also essential that you have a GCSE grade C or above in Mathematics and English, and be educated to A Level standard/NVQ Level 3 or equivalent. It would be a distinct advantage and desirable for applicants to have an understanding of requirements of Public Sector Internal Audit Standards or other auditing principles and practices. The successful candidate will be automatically enrolled in the Local Government Pension Scheme and will be requiredto obtain a Basic Disclosure from Disclosure Scotland.
