Maternity cover for approx 9 months

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) regulates barristers and their professional practice and specialised legal services businesses in England and Wales in the public interest. We are currently seeking a Regulation Manager to join us.

About the role

We are currently looking for someone with experience in the regulated sector to join us as a Regulation Manager in our newly established Regulatory Operations Department. The role is fixed term to cover maternity leave for approximately 9 months.

Our Supervision Team carries out thematic reviews and conducts monitoring visits to barristers’ chambers and the organisations that we authorise to supply legal services and to provide training to become a barrister. The work is varied and involves engaging with a wide range of people and organisations. There are also further challenges due to the current health crisis and it will be your responsibility to assess, manage and reduce risk to both Chambers and Barristers. You will also provide oversight with regards to the current impact on education and training within our field.

We are a small, friendly team with a working culture that is respectful and collegiate. We work collaboratively, drawing on our combined knowledge, skills and experience to ensure that we make sound decisions about the people and organisations that we regulate, and to ensure that we can respond flexibly when issues arise.

What we are looking for:

Experience in a regulated sector, in a regulatory supervision, compliance, risk, audit or other similar role.

The ability to interpret information, assess risk and to be confident when making decisions and communicating them to the people we regulate.

The skills to stand firm, challenge others when necessary and maintain external credibility.

A supervisory background may be an advantage as you will be leading a small team and will need to take responsibility for making key decisions.

What we offer

In return the Bar Standards Board offers excellent terms and conditions of employment, including:

Up to 31 days annual leave (pro rata)

Up to 12% employer’s pension contribution

Enhanced maternity and paternity pay

Flexible working, up to two days a week working from home

Life cover, and more

About us:

We are responsible for setting education and training requirements, setting standards, authorising organisations, monitoring the service provided, and handling complaints. Barristers work at the heart of our justice system so BSB’s mission is fundamentally important to the maintenance of the rule of law. It is an exciting time at the organisation as we embark on a new strategy to continue to regulate in the public interest, support those we regulate to face the future, and ensure there is a strong and sustainable regulator for the Bar.
