In 1981 a stroll along the banks of the River Leven in England’s Lake District revealed a scene of industrial dereliction. An 18th Century five storey cotton mill stood disused and decaying among corrugated iron and asbestos buildings stained with the ‘Dolly Blue’ which had once been manufactured there.
The 7 acre site, on the fringe of the Village of Backbarrow at the southern tip of Windermere, had become an eyesore, but one which presented local Architect Mike Williams with the opportunity to devise a project which would revitalise the area and replace local jobs lost through industrial closure.
The Lakeland Village jointly developed by the Douglas Construction Group and Kenning Motor Group opened its doors to its first timeshare owners in 1984.
For the past 31 years the Lakeland Village has been overseen by an elected Committee of owners who work closely with the management team to ensure standards are maintained.
