Dragon School

  • Oxford

The Dragon seeks to appoint a well-qualified and dynamic teacher to lead the School’s highly regarded MFL Department. This is a rare opportunity for the right person to lead this experienced team of eight linguists to help build on past success, starting September 2018. The position would suit a teacher with senior school (independent or maintained sector) experience, as well as those who have experience of teaching children of prep school age (8-13 years). Children take Common Entrance and Scholarship exams to leading senior schools at the end of Year 8.

The Dragon School was founded in 1877 to educate the sons of dons. From these modest beginnings the School has grown to be an internationally renowned independent day and boarding preparatory school for over 600 boys and girls aged 8 to 13. In September 1995 the School (which has charitable status) opened a pre-prep on the Woodstock Road for about 200 more children aged 4 to 7.

The Dragon was inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate in November 2014 and was found to be “Excellent” in all areas of teaching and pastoral care and “Exceptional” with regard to “The Quality of Pupils’ Achievements and Learning”.

The staff of over 300 full and part time individuals includes 120 teachers, 35 visiting music and learning support teachers, 30 teaching assistants, 35 pastoral staff and 90 support and administrative staff. A further range of individuals provide sports coaching and specialist services on a contract basis.

The Department is lively, well-resourced and fully abreast of the latest developments in teaching and looks to develop potential in all areas of the subject.

All staff contribute to extra-curricular activities. Games players would obviously find their talents used, but the school is large enough for a great variety of cultural and academic interests to be welcomed and to provide ample opportunities for further career progress within the school
